The passé composé is auxiliary + participle. Most verbs take avoir, but a closed group takes être, and with être the participle agrees with the subject.
The usual slip. Using avoir for everything, because English has only «have» — and never making the participle agree.
Why it catches you out. English has one auxiliary, «have», so like the Spanish speaker you use avoir for everything. And since English participles never change, you never make yours agree either.
