Reading literary subjunctives while preserving the story

CEFR C1

What you will learn

  • Reconstruct subject and time relation of fût, vînt and eût + participle in context.
  • Reformulate in contemporary French without turning a wish into fact or erasing anteriority.

Before you start

  • Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.

The idea

Reconstruct subject and time relation of fût, vînt and eût + participle in context.

The imperfect subjunctive occurs mainly in literary or marked writing: voulait qu’il vînt, exigeait qu’elle fût présente. It does not establish fulfilment. Identify the governing main clause and subordinate subject before modernising.

At third-person singular the circumflex distinguishes fut/fût, eut/eût, vint/vînt. Context confirms mood and function; spotting an accent does not replace interpretation. Eût parlé combines an imperfect-subjunctive auxiliary with a participle and can mark anteriority in a subordinate clause.

Neutral reformulation can use present or past subjunctive: voulait qu’il vienne; regrettait qu’il ait parlé. Preserve desire or anteriority without adding fulfilment. Literary forms are neither forbidden nor extinct: this task reads them and changes register rather than drilling their production.

Answer: Le directeur souhaitait que Noé vienne le lendemain. — This alternative is appropriate: «Le directeur souhaitait que Noé vienne le lendemain.». Vînt becomes vienne here; it asserts no arrival, swaps no subjects and does not replace le lendemain with la veille.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • Indicative past: an event is narrated.Elle fut surprise.
  • Subjunctive governed by a wish.Il voulait qu’elle fût surprise.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong Il souhaitait qu’elle fût là, donc elle était là.

Right Il souhaitait qu’elle soit là ; sa présence n’est pas affirmée.

English wanted her to be there expresses desire; the French literary ending adds no proof of attendance.

Combine both decisions

« Le guide souhaitait que Léa fût prête au départ ; il regrettait qu’elle eût oublié la carte la veille. » Modernisez les deux subordonnées et distinguez souhait et fait antérieur regretté.

Answer available without interaction
  • Modernize both subordinate clauses without changing their subjects or content.
  • Preserve each clause’s time relation to the main verb.
  • Explain the status of each event separately and the value of the chosen forms.

Answer: Le guide souhaitait que Léa soit prête au départ ; il regrettait qu’elle ait oublié la carte la veille. Le souhait ne prouve pas qu’elle était prête ; le regret porte sur un oubli antérieur.

Soit prête keeps the wish without proving readiness; ait oublié keeps earlier forgetting. Other wording is acceptable if both statuses remain.
