The idea
Gender belongs to the lexical entry: learn article, noun and plural together, and use only genuinely reliable ending clues.
In the nominative singular, the definite article is der for masculine, die for feminine and das for neuter. In the plural, all three genders use die. The indefinite article is ein, eine, ein and has no plural form: an indefinite plural uses the bare noun or another determiner.
Meaning gives some clues, but does not always decide. Personal nouns often follow lexical sex —der Bruder, die Schwester—, while form can override meaning: diminutives in -chen and -lein are neuter, including das Mädchen. Derivational endings such as -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion and -tät normally form feminine nouns; nominalized infinitives are neuter: das Essen.
Outside reliable patterns, learn the complete unit: der Markt, die Stadt, das Dorf; der Markt, die Märkte. Loanwords are not “almost always” neuter: der Computer, die E-Mail and das Team show different genders.
The article also changes with case, but this unit establishes only the nominative paradigm. Do not treat der as an eternal label in every sentence; accusative and other cases come later.

When it doesn't hold
What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.
- Diminutives in -chen and -lein are neuter even when the person is not.das Mädchen, das Fräulein
- der See is the lake and die See is the sea: the same word changes meaning with the article, so here the article is not decoration, it is the word.der See – die See
- Loanwords almost always come in as neuter, and that is a reliable clue.das Hotel, das Restaurant, das Handy
What your own language pushes you to say
Wrong Der Mädchen wartet.
Right Das Mädchen wartet.
English has no grammatical gender at all, so the instinct is to pick the article that matches the person's sex. German picks it from the ending instead, and -chen makes any word neuter.
