es: reference, subject and first-field position

CEFR C1

What you will learn

  • Distinguish first-field es from an actual subject.
  • Retain impersonal es when fronting another constituent.
  • Explain agreement and reference in reformulations with es.

Before you start

  • Master final-verb subordination, cases and subject–verb relations at B1.

The idea

In Es kamen drei Gäste, es fills the first field; drei Gäste is the plural subject controlling kamen.

In Es kamen drei Gäste, es fills the first field; drei Gäste is the plural subject controlling kamen. If another constituent comes first, that es disappears: Heute kamen drei Gäste. Do not automatically move it into the middle field.

In Es regnet, es belongs to the impersonal verb and survives a new first constituent: Heute regnet es. In Das Kind schläft; es ist müde, es refers to a neuter antecedent. Use movement and reference tests, not spelling, to distinguish functions.

Correlative es anticipates a clause: Es freut mich, dass du kommst. Fronting that clause can change whether the correlate is needed; this depends on the construction, not a rule deleting every es. Separate subject tests from first-field tests.

Choose the answer meeting the task and its German justification. Read the alternatives before checking.

Answer: Gestern kamen zwei Gutachter.

The key combines plural agreement, the formal subject of regnen and an open indirect question. Dass replaces the question with another clause type; Nach moves the rain outside the visit. In the original sequence, the first es only fills the first field, the second is the formal subject of regnen and the third is the correlate of the indirect question.

Answer: Am Montag wurden drei Anträge geprüft.

The fronted clause is the subject of ist vorgesehen and retains a response planned for Friday. geantwortet hat adds a completed event; bis Freitag turns a specific day into a deadline. In the original, the first es only fills the first field: Anträge remains the subject and requires wurden. The second es is a clause correlate, not a pronoun referring to Amt.

Choose the answer meeting the task and its German justification. Read the alternatives before checking.

Answer: Gestern wurde es saniert.

The first es is referential and remains; the second is a first-field placeholder and disappears. The key preserves two windows and the unknown cellar condition. The other options omit the number or claim the cellar is known to be dry. In the original, the first es refers to Gebäude, the second only fills the first field and the third is the correlate of the ob question. That correlate does not establish that the cellar is dry.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • With schneien, es is a formal subject and remains when Seit gestern occupies the first field.Es schneit. Seit gestern schneit es.
  • The clause dass du bleibst moves to the first field and is the subject of freut; this construction no longer contains correlative es.Es freut mich, dass du bleibst. Dass du bleibst, freut mich.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong Heute kamen es vier Gäste.

Right Heute kamen vier Gäste.

Heute occupies the first field, removing placeholder es. Gäste controls plural kamen.

Transfer to a new case

Solve the new case in German and justify the decisions. Check against the criteria, not just the model wording.

Answer available without interaction
  • Distinguish first-field es from an actual subject.
