What tells the two sounds apart

  • ˈThe mark comes before the stressed syllable: be-STEL-len, AUF-ste-hen.
  • /ə/The be- prefix in bestellen is unstressed; avoid putting the main stress there.

Why it is hard

English stress varies across words too, but it does not tell you this German prefix pattern. Be- is unstressed in bestellen; separable auf- is stressed in aufstehen. The ˈ mark shows where to put the main stress.
