die Miete

[diː ˈmiːtə]

the rent

die Mitte

[diː ˈmɪtə]

the middle

What tells the two sounds apart

  • [iː] / [ɪ]Miete has long close [iː]; Mitte has shorter, more open [ɪ]. Lengthening the same vowel is not enough. In the sentences keep the distinction without doubling the t of Mitte or reading ie as two vowels. Check that the intended word remains recognisable at a comfortable speed.

Why it is hard

Miete has long close [iː]; Mitte has shorter, more open [ɪ]. Lengthening the same vowel is not enough. In the sentences keep the distinction without doubling the t of Mitte or reading ie as two vowels. Check that the intended word remains recognisable at a comfortable speed.

Die Miete ist hoch, aber die Wohnung liegt in der Mitte der Stadt.
