schön / schon: long ö and o

CEFR A1

schön

/ʃøːn/

beautiful

schon

/ʃoːn/

already

What tells the two sounds apart

  • /øː/Tongue forward as for e, rounded lips; a long vowel.
  • /oː/Long back vowel with rounded lips.

Why it is hard

Do not turn the long vowel of schon into an English-style glide. For schön, also move the tongue forward while keeping rounded lips; the dots indicate a different vowel.

Das Brot ist schon da und der Tisch ist schön.

To practise

  1. hören/ˈhøːʁən/hear
  2. Sohn/zoːn/son
  3. Öl/øːl/oil
  4. Brot/bʁoːt/bread
