Tür / Tour: long ü and u
CEFR A1
Tür
/tyːɐ̯/
door
Tour
/tuːɐ̯/
tour
What tells the two sounds apart
- /yː/Long vowel: tongue forward and lips rounded.
- /uː/Long vowel: tongue back and lips rounded.
Why it is hard
Do not make ü the vowel of English too or add a y sound before it. Keep the tongue forward and the lips rounded for Tür, then compare with the back vowel in Tour.
Die Tür ist grün.
