The chess table

CEFR A188 words

Questions

You answer them with the text in front of you. It isn't memory: it's understanding.

  1. At ten past five on their regular chess day, which situation fits the text?

— Paula arrives at five; the narrator arrives ten minutes later. The work delay belongs to the narrator, and their arrivals are separate.

  2. Why do they reject the free table near the door?

— Their usual table is occupied. The free table near the door is too small, so they choose the large central table; the back corner and window describe the usual location.

  3. The narrator normally arrives after Paula.

True — Paula arrives at five; the narrator arrives ten minutes later.

  4. Why do they use a different table today?

Two people are using their table — Two people are already at their table, so they look for another.

  5. The table by the door is free, but does not offer enough space for the friends.

True — They reject the free table because it has little space and choose a large central one.

  6. What time does the narrator normally arrive?

At ten past five — Five plus ten minutes is 5:10. Five is Paula’s arrival and the narrator’s finishing time.
