French negation has two parts with the verb in between: je ne parle pas. Before a vowel, ne becomes n'.
The usual slip. Dropping the ne, because English negates with one word. Je mange pas is spoken French, not written French.
Why it catches you out. English needs only not, so what you lose is the FIRST part, exactly the opposite of the Portuguese speaker. Je mange pas is fine when speaking, but in writing the ne has to be there.
