The plural you cannot hear

The rule, in three lines

The plural -s is silent. What marks number is the article: le livre / les livres, un chat / des chats. And some plurals take -x: un journal / des journaux, un cheveu / des cheveux, un bateau / des bateaux.

The usual slip. Leaving the word singular because it sounds the same: «les livre». The -s is silent, but without it the sentence is misspelled.

Why it catches you out. English plurals are heard too, and English has no plural article. So you have nothing to hold on to: the French article is the only marker, and you are not used to looking at it.
