Earlier events within a past narrative

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Reconstruct two past time frames without confusing narrative order with event order.
  • Reformulate by choosing tense and auxiliary while preserving subject and time relation.

Before you start

  • Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.

The idea

Reconstruct two past time frames without confusing narrative order with event order.

The plus-que-parfait places an event before a past reference point. That reference may appear later in the text: mentioning an action first does not make it the earlier event. Identify what was already complete when the main scene occurred.

It combines imparfait avoir or être with a past participle: avait fermé, étaient arrivées. Keep the verb’s auxiliary. The imparfait describes a setting or ongoing action; the passé composé presents an event here; the plus-que-parfait opens an earlier time frame.

Do not choose it just because hier appears or an event seems distant. Consecutive events can both use the passé composé. When changing tense, check which event was earlier and which remains the reference: this compound tense expresses a relation, not an absolute date.

Form and relation

French caseWhat to preserve
Il a fermé la porte, puis il a appelé Nora. Two successive events without an earlier time frame.
Il avait fermé la porte quand Nora a appelé.Closing precedes the call.

How it sounds

  • Quand Nora a ouvert le dossier, une collègue avait déjà corrigé les chiffres. The correction was complete before Nora opened the file.
  • Les visiteuses étaient parties lorsque le gardien a fermé la salle.Partir keeps être and feminine plural agreement.
Two scenes in the same office: a woman leaves at 9:00 and a man arrives at 10:30; the desk is empty in the second scene.
Observe agents and the relation between scenes; compare them with the written cases.

Answer: Quand l’annonce a été faite à 8 h 30, les deux chercheuses étaient sorties à 8 h ; elles sont revenues à 9 h pour la commenter. — This alternative is appropriate: «Quand l’annonce a été faite à 8 h 30, les deux chercheuses étaient sorties à 8 h ; elles sont revenues à 9 h pour la commenter.». When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • Two successive events without an earlier time frame.Il a fermé la porte, puis il a appelé Nora.
  • Closing precedes the call.Il avait fermé la porte quand Nora a appelé.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong Les visiteuses avaient parties.

Right Les visiteuses étaient parties.

English had left uses had, but French partir requires être.

Combine both decisions

À 10 h, Karim découvre la note. À 9 h, Inès a quitté le bureau. Reformulez en une phrase au passé, puis expliquez quel événement sert de repère.

Answer: Quand Karim a découvert la note, Inès avait quitté le bureau. La découverte est le repère passé ; le départ d’Inès lui est antérieur.

Discovery is the past reference; leaving precedes it. Lorsque or a different clause order is acceptable if the relation is preserved.
