CEFR A2
What you will learn
- Correct a duration presented as finished when the activity goes on: depuis versus pendant.
- Reject a depuis when the activity is over and state its duration and the time since it ended.
- Place a start with il y a from the message date and recognise which end is missing.
Before you start
- Present tense of être, avoir and frequent -er verbs; subject pronouns and ne… pas. At A2, basic passé composé and imparfait.
The idea
The same length of time can measure an activity, locate a past event or link a start to the present.
With depuis, the case studied here starts earlier and continues now: je travaille ici depuis deux mois. Keep the present tense. Depuis can also introduce a starting point: depuis lundi. Do not infer continuation when context says the activity ended.
Pendant measures the activity’s length: j’ai travaillé pendant deux heures. Il y a locates an event relative to now: j’ai commencé il y a deux heures. The second sentence does not say how long the work lasted; the first does not say how long ago it ended.
A departure time, a duration and a starting point play different roles. Reconstruct the interval before writing. Pendant is not restricted to the past: demain, je vais lire pendant une heure is possible. These cues do not automatically select a tense.
Cases and forms
| Situation | French form | Reference or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Continuité maintenant | Je lis depuis dix minutes.
How it sounds
- Malo lit depuis une heure. Il a commencé il y a une heure. One hour passes from ten to eleven. Reading continues, so depuis keeps the present; il y a locates the start rather than measuring a completed activity.

- Preserve who acts and the case facts; add no information.
- Yan is no longer swimming: no depuis + present; make clear the activity is over.
- Duration with pendant (une heure) and distance from the end with il y a (trois heures).
The depuis question assumes Yan is still swimming. He finished at 14:00: pendant measures 13–14 and il y a 14–17.

Correct in French the conclusion “Nora travelled for two days” and explain in French what you know and do not know about the trip.
[P1.O1] Le 20 juin, Sami écrit : « J’ai quitté Paris il y a une semaine. » [P2.O1] Le 30 juin, il écrit : « Je suis de retour à Paris. » [P3.O1] Il a voyagé en train. Correct in French the conclusion “Sami’s trip lasted a week” and explain in French what you know and do not know about the trip.

Answer: Your answer in French: Nora est partie le 1er mai.
Criteria for reviewing your answer:
- Preserve who acts and the case facts; add no information.
- Work out the departure from the message date (3 May), not from today: 1 May.
- The case gives no return day: the full duration stays open; do not measure it with pendant.
Criteria for reviewing your answer:
- Explain that il y a places the departure and that the return day is missing.
Il y a counts from the moment of the message. The second message proves Nora came back, but not when: the trip cannot be measured with pendant.
Answer: Your answer in French: Sami est parti le 13 juin.

- The case gives no return day: the full duration stays open.
Criteria for reviewing your answer:
- Explain that il y a places the departure and that the return day is missing.
Il y a counts from 20 June. The message on the 30th proves Sami came back, but not when.
When it doesn't hold
What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.
- Pendant can also measure a future plan; do not swap it for il y a just because there is an amount of time.
What your own language pushes you to say
Il y a places the start; it does not measure a finished activity. If it is still going on, use depuis + present; pendant + passé composé only works once it has ended and you know the end.
Combine the decisions
Write three sentences in French about Paul for a message tonight: how long his work lasted, how long ago he finished and what he is doing now and since when.
Answer available without interaction
- Preserve who acts and the case facts; add no information.
- Finished work: pendant + passé composé (deux heures) and il y a for the end (trois heures).
- Ongoing game: depuis + present (une heure et demie, or depuis dix-huit heures trente).
Answer: Paul a travaillé pendant deux heures. Il a fini il y a trois heures. Il joue depuis une heure et demie.
These are three intervals with different ends: 15–17 (duration), 17–20 (since the end) and 18:30–20 (ongoing game).
