What you will learn
- Reformulate a formal statement with simple or complex inversion without making it a question.
- Distinguish consequential from additive aussi and separate peut-être from peut-être que.
Before you start
- Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.
The idea
Reformulate a formal statement with simple or complex inversion without making it a question.
At the start of a formal statement, peut-être can take inversion: Peut-être reviendra-t-elle. With a noun subject keep the noun and add a pronoun: Peut-être Nora reviendra-t-elle. Compound tenses invert the auxiliary: Peut-être a-t-elle oublié. These inversions do not make questions.
Linking t appears between a vowel-ending form and il, elle or on: arrivera-t-il, a-t-elle. Do not duplicate it after t or d: vient-il, prend-elle. After peut-être que keep statement order: Peut-être que Nora reviendra.
Initial aussi can introduce consequence: Les données divergent; aussi faut-il vérifier. Additive aussi means also and can occur within a clause: Elle vérifie aussi les dates. Context, position and purpose decide; do not invert every aussi or call every spoken variant ungrammatical.
Form and relation
| French case | What to preserve |

When it doesn't hold
What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.
- Statement with inversion.Peut-être viendra-t-elle.
- Que keeps statement order.Peut-être qu’elle viendra.
What your own language pushes you to say
Wrong Peut-être que Nora viendra-t-elle.
Right Peut-être que Nora viendra.
English perhaps permits ordinary order; French distinguishes peut-être inversion from peut-être que.
Combine both decisions
Le retour de Maëlle demain est possible, mais non confirmé. Rédigez une déclaration formelle avec peut-être sans que et une autre avec peut-être que. Expliquez le changement de structure.
Answer available without interaction
- Provide both requested formal versions, one for each construction.
- Both retain the person, time and degree of certainty in the case.
- Explain subject and verb position, including any reprise of the nominal subject.
Answer: Peut-être Maëlle reviendra-t-elle demain. / Peut-être que Maëlle reviendra demain. Sans que, le sujet nominal est repris par elle avec inversion ; avec que, l’ordre déclaratif est conservé. Le retour reste une possibilité.
With initial peut-être and no que, keep the nominal subject Maëlle and add elle after the finite verb: reviendra-t-elle or sera-t-elle de retour. With peut-être que, use declarative order. Both versions must present tomorrow’s return as a possibility.
