Argument connectors: guiding the reasoning
CEFR C1
What you will learn
- Choose connectors by logical operation: pivot, concession, reinforcement or contrast.
- Control the construction and mood required by à moins que, encore que and related frames.
The idea
An argument connector is not decoration or a device for avoiding repetition: it signals the logical relationship the reader should build. Replacing it may leave two grammatical sentences while destroying the reasoning.
Or introduces a fact or premise that forces the argument to change direction: La mesure paraît efficace. Or, aucune donnée indépendante ne la confirme. It may challenge an expectation or open an objection, but it does not by itself mean the entire previous claim is false. Nor does it mean ou or donc.
Certes… mais organises a concession followed by a limit or counterargument. The concession is not erased: Certes, le protocole est lourd, mais il protège les données acknowledges the burden before supporting another priority. The argumentative weight usually falls on the mais clause.
D’autant plus que reinforces an evaluation or reason already present: Ce contrôle est nécessaire, d’autant plus que les résultats divergent. D’autant moins que weakens an expectation. En revanche contrasts comparable items; au contraire contradicts or reverses what precedes it. En effet confirms or explains; en fait corrects or reframes.
Quitte à + infinitive presents a consequence, risk or cost the speaker accepts: Quitte à reprendre l’analyse, autant vérifier toutes les sources. It need not refer to a literal price. À moins que introduces a hypothetical exception and takes the subjunctive; expletive ne is common in careful language but adds no negation.
Encore que introduces a concessive reservation, normally with the subjunctive in careful usage: L’hypothèse reste plausible, encore qu’elle soit difficile à prouver. Il n’en reste pas moins que closes a concession and reasserts a conclusion with the indicative. Choice depends on logical operation, mood and register, not word-for-word translation.
Argument paradigm
| Operation | Connector | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| pivot | or | proposition autonome |
| concession + limite | certes… mais | deux membres |
| renforcement | d’autant plus que | indicatif selon le fait exprimé |
| conséquence acceptée | quitte à | infinitif |
| exception | à moins que | subjonctif, ne possible |
| réserve concessive | encore que | subjonctif en usage soigné |
Mood is determined by the construction and the clause’s status, not by the paragraph’s overall tone.
How it sounds
- Le délai doit être prolongé, d’autant plus que deux étapes essentielles n’ont pas encore commencé.The second sentence gives a fact that supports extending the deadline. That fact reinforces an evaluation already stated. The operation is reinforcement, not pivot or consequence.

Your turn
Two or three, to check that the bit above landed.
On présente cette estimation comme définitive. ___, elle repose sur un échantillon incomplet.
Or — The second sentence introduces a fact that forces the previous claim to be reconsidered; that pivot calls for or.
Which pair of French connectors completes the argument? “___, la mesure est imparfaite, ___ elle réduit déjà les erreurs les plus graves.”
Certes / mais — The first clause grants a real limitation and the second preserves the favourable argument: concession with certes and limitation with mais.
Le comité publiera le rapport, à moins qu’un expert ne ___ une erreur majeure.
signale — À moins que introduces a hypothetical exception and requires the subjunctive; signale is present subjunctive here. The ne is expletive and does not reverse polarity.
When it doesn't hold
What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.
- ConfirmEn effet, les chiffres concordent.
- CorrectEn fait, les chiffres divergent.
- CompareEn revanche, ce modèle coûte moins cher.
- ContradictAu contraire, ce modèle augmente les coûts.
What your own language pushes you to say
Wrong Il pleut ; pourtant nous restons chez nous.
Right Il pleut ; donc nous restons chez nous.
Pourtant signals an unexpected contrast; if staying indoors is presented as the consequence of rain, the stated relationship requires donc.
Curriculum alignment and sources
- CEFR C1 · understand long, demanding texts, recognise implicit meaning and produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts; this grammar selection is editorial. · Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Companion Volume
- Spanish national rules refer to the CEFR but do not assign C1 to a specific school year. These three pages therefore have no school-year mask. · Real Decreto 243/2022, currículo básico de Bachillerato
- The reused Italian source sets A1 at the end of the first cycle for the second community language; it does not support C1 French in a specific class. · Decreto 9 dicembre 2025, n. 221 · nuove Indicazioni nazionali
