Relative clauses: established or sought existence

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Relate relative-clause mood to established existence or a sought property.
  • Explain a mood change without imposing automatic subjunctive after seul or meilleur.

Before you start

  • Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.

The idea

Relate relative-clause mood to established existence or a sought property.

Indicative relatives often present an established property: Je connais un outil qui fonctionne. Subjunctive can express a sought condition without asserting that a qualifying referent exists: Je cherche un outil qui puisse fonctionner sans réseau. Searching does not forbid indicative when the speaker identifies a real object.

After a superlative, seul or unique, subjunctive is frequent for evaluation or virtuality. Indicative can also be valid for stating a fact: C’est le seul candidat qui a répondu. Do not declare a possible interpretation false to force one answer.

Read the context: was a response observed or is a requirement being set? Options include meaning analysis, not just an ending. Negation or questioning may favour subjunctive, but do not automatically erase facts presented as real.

Answer: Nous cherchons un appareil qui puisse fonctionner hors ligne : propriété requise, existence non affirmée. — This alternative is appropriate: «Nous cherchons un appareil qui puisse fonctionner hors ligne : propriété requise, existence non affirmée.». Form and analysis must match: puisse states a requirement, not discovery or a successful trial.

The documented response permits indicative; seule neither cancels reality nor imposes a condition.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • Statement of an observed signature.C’est le seul dossier qui a été signé hier.
  • Evaluation within what can be proposed.C’est le meilleur dossier que nous puissions proposer.

What your own language pushes you to say

Only or best is not a mechanical trigger that makes French indicative ungrammatical.

Combine both decisions

Answer available without interaction
  • Provide a sentence for each situation without transferring certainty between them.
  • Retain the room reference and accessibility in both.
  • Justify the moods through the referent’s status; other formulations preserving that status are valid.

In the model, est accessible states a property of the visited room and soit accessible presents a requirement without confirming existence. Also accept idiomatic variants with another justified mood, such as the conditional, when the full statement preserves the established visit and leaves open whether the room being sought exists.
