Sequence: après que and the past infinitive

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Preserve subjects and event order when converting a temporal clause to an infinitive.
  • Choose indicative after après que and express prior completion before a future event.

Before you start

  • Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.

The idea

Preserve subjects and event order when converting a temporal clause to an infinitive.

This does not depend on past time: Après que le service aura confirmé, nous publierons allows future perfect because confirmation will precede publication.

With the same agent you can reduce: Après avoir vérifié les dates, Nora a envoyé le dossier. The past infinitive combines infinitive avoir or être with a participle: après être arrivées. Different agents can make reduction assign the first action to the wrong subject; keep an explicit clause.

Subjunctive after après que occurs in usage, but this task specifies careful standard writing and does not select it. Do not turn all anteriority into past subjunctive or add ne automatically. This unit concerns temporal clauses; durations with depuis or pendant are another objective.

Form and relation

French caseWhat to preserve
Après être arrivées, les visiteuses ont signé.Arrival completed before signing.
Question before signing.

How it sounds

Same agent; reduction possible.
Two agents; keep the clause.

— This alternative is appropriate: «Après que Nora a vérifié le dossier, Karim l’a envoyé.». The explicit clause keeps Nora as verifier; reduction would assign verification to Karim.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • Arrival completed before signing.Après être arrivées, les visiteuses ont signé.
  • Question before signing.

What your own language pushes you to say

English after has no mood contrast of this kind; French après que takes indicative here.

Combine both decisions

Answer available without interaction
  • Provide one version with après que and one reduced version.
  • Both retain who performs each action and their time order.
  • Justify the subordinate mood and the reduction using subject identity and anteriority.

Indicative respects après que; avoir contrôlé preserves the prior event and Élodie as agent. Other clause orders are acceptable if those features remain.
