Infinitives: commas and modifier attachment

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Apply current section 73 to expanded infinitival clauses.
  • Mark both boundaries of an inserted clause.
  • Distinguish bare infinitives from complex predicates without overgeneralising.

Before you start

  • Master final-verb subordination, cases and subject–verb relations at B1.

The idea

Section 73 of the 2024 rules treats infinitival subordinate clauses as comma-delimited clauses.

Section 73 of the 2024 rules treats infinitival subordinate clauses as comma-delimited clauses. An expanded zu-infinitive requires delimitation; an inserted clause needs both boundaries. Do not retain the former optional comma as a general rule.

A bare, unexpanded zu-infinitive can be understood as a word group or a clause: Er versucht abzunehmen / Er versucht, abzunehmen. scheinen and other complex predicates are not automatically separated. Analyse structure before declaring an error.

Comma placement helps delimit which modifier belongs to deciding and which to the decided action. Do not fix punctuation while retaining the wrong temporal attachment.

Relations to preserve

How it sounds

The comma opens the expanded clause; noch heute dates sending the documents rather than deciding.
  • Den Plan, die Unterlagen zu versenden, setzte sie um.The infinitival clause depends on Plan and is inserted: both comma boundaries are required.
  • Er scheint die Unterlagen zu kennen.scheint and zu kennen form a complex predicate here; die Unterlagen is the object of kennen. No comma is inserted between the components.
Three scenes: a woman puts a sheet in an envelope; a person hands a shipment over a post office counter; a man reads documents.

Choose the answer meeting the task and its German justification. Read the alternatives before checking.

Answer: Sie beschloss, am Dienstag früh abzureisen. — Der Wochentag gehört zur beabsichtigten Abreise.

With the comma after beschloss, Tuesday modifies leaving; before the comma it would modify deciding. No comma fails to delimit the expanded infinitive.

The inserted clause needs two commas; each alternative leaves one boundary unmarked.

The unexpanded infinitive allows both analyses. Neither removing nor imposing the comma is mandatory here.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • The infinitival clause depends on Plan and is inserted: both comma boundaries are required.
  • scheint and zu kennen form a complex predicate here; die Unterlagen is the object of kennen. No comma is inserted between the components.Er scheint die Unterlagen zu kennen.

What your own language pushes you to say

The decision is today and the opening tomorrow. The comma delimits the expanded infinitival clause.

Transfer to a new case

Solve the new case in German and justify the decisions. Check against the criteria, not just the model wording.

The comma delimits the expanded clause; yesterday dates deciding and next week dates opening. scheinen forms a complex predicate. Other orders with these attachments are accepted.
