Past counterfactuals: what did not happen

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Recognise the pattern taught in “Past counterfactuals: what did not happen” in a short example.
  • Choose the appropriate form from “Past counterfactuals: what did not happen” using explicit evidence.
  • Apply and justify the rule from “Past counterfactuals: what did not happen” in a new case.

The idea

The Irrealis der Vergangenheit views a past possibility from a present in which we already know it was not realised. It is formed with hätte or wäre and the corresponding verbal content.

The basic form is a Perfekt shifted into Konjunktiv II: hätte plus Partizip II for verbs whose Perfekt uses haben, and wäre plus Partizip II for those that use sein. Thus ich habe gearbeitet becomes ich hätte gearbeitet, while ich bin gefahren becomes ich wäre gefahren. The auxiliary expresses counterfactuality and the participle keeps the lexical content.

In a counterfactual conditional, the if-clause presents an unrealised condition and the main clause its unrealised consequence: Wenn wir früher losgefahren wären, hätten wir den Zug erreicht. The opposite facts are inferred —we did not leave earlier and did not catch the train—but the interpretation needs contextual support; an isolated form can also express reproach, a wish or a missed possibility.

Verb order depends on clause type. In a main clause, hätte or wäre occupies second position and the participle closes the verbal bracket: Wir hätten den Zug erreicht. In a subordinate clause with wenn, the verb group goes at the end and the auxiliary follows the participle: weil wir früher losgefahren wären. When the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause begins directly with its finite verb: Wenn ..., hätten wir ....

With a modal verb, German uses the Ersatzinfinitiv: hätte + lexical infinitive + modal infinitive. The form is therefore Sie hätte den Fehler entdecken können, not hätte den Fehler entdeckt gekonnt. In normative subordinate order, hätte precedes the double infinitive: weil sie den Fehler hätte entdecken können. This position is specific and is best learnt as a contrasted block.

Not every past reference requires this form. An open condition about an unknown fact can remain indicative; a past counterfactual presents an alternative the speaker treats as already excluded. To solve one, identify that factual contrast first, choose haben or sein as in the Perfekt, and then check whether a modal requires the double infinitive.

How it sounds

  • Ohne den Stau wären wir pünktlich angekommen.ohne introduces an implicit unrealised condition.
  • Du hättest mich anrufen sollen. The double infinitive expresses a recommended action that did not occur.
  • Wenn sie gefragt hätte, hätten wir geantwortet. Both clauses build the excluded alternative.
A timeline forks into the event that happened and a transparent past route that can no longer be taken.
The past counterfactual builds an already closed alternative and its unrealised consequences.

Your turn

Two or three, to check that the bit above landed.

  1. Use this image

Wenn wir am Hauptbahnhof rechtzeitig ___, hätten wir den Anschluss erreicht.

umgestiegen wären — umsteigen forms the Perfekt with sein; in the counterfactual subordinate clause, the participle precedes wären.

  2. Use this image

Ich ___, wenn du mir früher Bescheid gesagt hättest.

hätte reserviert — reservieren forms the Perfekt with haben; in the main clause, the finite auxiliary opens the bracket: hätte reserviert.

  3. Use this image

Sie hätte den Ausfall früher ___.

verhindern können — With a modal, the past counterfactual uses lexical infinitive verhindern and substitute infinitive können.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • With beinahe the sentence reports something that did NOT happen, even though the verb is past.Beinahe hätte ich es vergessen.
  • With no wenn and an exclamation mark, the sentence becomes a full lament.Hätte ich das gewusst!
  • When the modal is itself the main verb, it does take its participle: gewollt.Ich hätte kommen können, wenn ich gewollt hätte.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong Ich hätte früher kommen gekonnt.

Right Ich hätte früher kommen können.

English says «could have come» with the modal first and no participle at all, so when the German modal has to appear at the end the instinct is to give it a participle it never takes.
