ohne and statt: absent actions and their actors

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Preserve absent accompaniment without adding intention.
  • Retain different actors when reducing clauses.
  • Distinguish a substitute action from purpose or prior timing.

Before you start

  • Master final-verb subordination, cases and subject–verb relations at B1.

The idea

ohne…zu asserts a main action without the accompanying action; it adds no purpose.

ohne…zu asserts a main action without the accompanying action; it adds no purpose. Sie ging, ohne zu bezahlen does not say leaving aimed to avoid payment. Establish the implicit actor before reducing an ohne dass clause.

With different actors, ohne dass allows an explicit subject: Er ging, ohne dass sie es bemerkte. ohne es zu bemerken normally assigns not noticing to him. If that changes the account, retain the finite clause.

statt…zu presents an action as a substitute for an expected one. ohne…zu only omits accompaniment. Do not remove or duplicate negation: ohne den Text zu ändern preserves the text; adding nicht reverses the sense. Delimit expanded clauses with commas.

Relations to preserve

FormReading and checking
Nora kopierte die Datei, ohne den Inhalt zu verändern.ohne…zu asserts a main action without the accompanying action; it adds no purpose. Sie ging, ohne zu bezahlen does not say leaving aimed to avoid payment. Establish the implicit actor before reducing an ohne dass clause.
Nora ging, ohne dass Tom sie bemerkte. With different actors, ohne dass allows an explicit subject: Er ging, ohne dass sie es bemerkte. ohne es zu bemerken normally assigns not noticing to him. If that changes the account, retain the finite clause.
Statt die Datei zu löschen, archivierte Tom sie.statt…zu presents an action as a substitute for an expected one. ohne…zu only omits accompaniment. Do not remove or duplicate negation: ohne den Text zu ändern preserves the text; adding nicht reverses the sense. Delimit expanded clauses with commas.

How it sounds

Nora makes the copy without changing the content. ohne…zu does not turn preserving the content into a goal.
  • Nora ging, ohne dass Tom sie bemerkte.Nora leaves and Tom does not notice her. Reducing this to ohne sie zu bemerken would assign the failure to notice to Nora and change the roles.
Tom archives the file instead of deleting it. statt…zu presents the replaced action; sie refers back to die Datei.
Three scenes: a woman copies a computer file; a woman leaves through a door while a man remains at his desk with his back turned; a man files a folder.

Preserve the relation

Choose the answer meeting the task and its German justification. Read the alternatives before checking. Nora kopiert den Text. Sie ändert dabei kein Wort. Welche Fassung erhält die Nichtänderung ohne zusätzliche Absicht?

Choose an answer

Answer available without interaction

Check the reformulation

Choose the answer meeting the task and its German justification. Read the alternatives before checking. Ben geht; Ada bemerkt seinen Weggang nicht. Bewahre ausdrücklich, wer nichts bemerkt.

Choose an answer

Answer available without interaction

Answer: Ben geht, ohne dass Ada seinen Weggang bemerkt. — Ada bleibt ausdrücklich die Person ohne Wahrnehmung.

ohne dass allows Ada as subject. The infinitive assigns not noticing to Ben; the other finite clause changes who leaves.

Evaluate the scope

Choose the answer meeting the task and its German justification. Read the alternatives before checking. Es war eine Reparatur vorgesehen. Stattdessen tauschte Jo das Gerät aus. Welche Fassung erhält den ausdrücklich genannten Ersatz?

Choose an answer

Answer available without interaction

statt retains replacing the repair with an exchange of the device. Zum Zweck der Reparatur adds a purpose; nachdem asserts an already completed repair.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • Nora leaves and Tom does not notice her. Reducing this to ohne sie zu bemerken would assign the failure to notice to Nora and change the roles.Nora ging, ohne dass Tom sie bemerkte.
  • Tom archives the file instead of deleting it. statt…zu presents the replaced action; sie refers back to die Datei.

What your own language pushes you to say

Context: Pia left and Omar did not notice her departure. The finite clause retains Omar as the person who failed to notice; an infinitive would assign that to Pia.

Transfer to a new case

Solve the new case in German and justify the decisions. Check against the criteria, not just the model wording.

Answer available without interaction
  • Preserve absent accompaniment without adding intention.

Preserve substitution, unchanged content and the director’s lack of knowledge. The final clause needs an explicit subject; accept other phrasings meeting all three criteria.
