Participles as adjectives: condensed attributes

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Recognise the pattern taught in “Participles as adjectives: condensed attributes” in a short example.
  • Choose the appropriate form from “Participles as adjectives: condensed attributes” using explicit evidence.
  • Apply and justify the rule from “Participles as adjectives: condensed attributes” in a new case.

The idea

A participle can occupy an adjective position and condense an action around a noun. Its ending depends on determiner, gender, number and case, not on its being a participle.

Partizip I is formed from the infinitive plus -d: arbeiten → arbeitend, lächeln → lächelnd. In an attribute it commonly presents the referent as an active participant in a simultaneous process: die wartenden Gäste are the guests who are waiting. This tendency is useful, but it does not replace reading the verb and its context.

Partizip II follows each verb's own pattern: geschlossen, renoviert, abgereist. In attributes it commonly profiles an earlier process, a result or, with transitive verbs, a relationship close to the passive: der unterschriebene Vertrag is the contract that was signed. Not every participle combines with every noun: semantic compatibility and verbal valency still apply.

When a participle comes before a noun, it declines like any adjective. Compare der wartende Gast, den wartenden Gast, mit dem wartenden Gast and die wartenden Gäste. The participial stem remains intact and receives the adjective ending required by the noun phrase. After sein, bleiben or werden there is no such ending: Die Tür ist geschlossen. This can describe a state and is not automatically an elliptical attribute.

An expanded attribute keeps complements and adverbials between the determiner and noun: die seit einer Stunde vor dem Eingang wartenden Gäste. To decode it, locate the final noun first, then find the declined participle and reconstruct a relative clause: Gäste, die seit einer Stunde vor dem Eingang warten.

To produce one, start from an unambiguous verbal relationship, choose Partizip I to present a simultaneous active process or Partizip II to present anteriority or a result, place its complements before it, and decline the whole expression for the noun. This procedure prevents choosing a form merely because its translation looks adjectival.

How it sounds

  • Wir prüfen die gestern eingegangenen Anträge.eingegangenen profiles anteriority and agrees with the accusative plural.
  • Der seit Monaten geplante Umbau beginnt. The time adjunct remains inside the expanded attribute.
An ongoing action and a completed action visually fold around two central objects.
The participle keeps verbal information and takes the attributive adjective ending.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • On its own and undeclined, Partizip I says how something is done.Er kam lachend herein.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong der veröffentlichte gestern Bericht

Right der gestern veröffentlichte Bericht

English cannot pack anything longer than a word or two in front of the noun, so the extended attribute has no model and its pieces end up in English order.
