The idea
The German process passive combines conjugated werden with a participle and foregrounds the process, while the agent may be omitted. It contrasts with the state passive built with sein.
In a declarative main clause, werden occupies the finite slot and the participle closes the verbal group: «Das Haus wird renoviert». The subject determines the form of werden: werde, wirst, wird, werden or werdet.
The preterite uses conjugated wurde: «Das Haus wurde renoviert». The perfect has «Das Haus ist renoviert worden», with conjugated sein, the lexical participle and worden. Here worden marks the passive auxiliary and contrasts with geworden in lexical change-of-state uses.
If the active clause has an accusative object, that object may become the nominative subject: «Man renoviert das Haus» becomes «Das Haus wird renoviert». A dative object keeps its case, and there may be no nominative subject: «Man hilft dem Gast» becomes «Dem Gast wird geholfen». Transformation therefore follows functions, not a mechanical exchange of words.
The agent is optional. von plus the dative commonly presents an agent or source; durch plus the accusative often presents a means, intermediary or cause. The choice depends on the semantic relation, not merely on whether the referent is a person or thing.
Before writing a passive, check whether an active clause with man communicates the same focus better: «Man sagt, dass...». With a modal, the modal is finite and the end contains participle plus werden: «Das muss heute gemacht werden».
The process passive with werden contrasts with a resulting state built with sein: «Das Fenster wird geöffnet» describes the process; «Das Fenster ist geöffnet» describes the state. Check tense, agreement, functions and focus separately.

Your turn
Two or three, to check that the bit above landed.
Bilde das Vorgangspassiv im Präsens: Die Rechnung ___ heute bezahlt.
wird — The sentence describes a present process and Rechnung is singular: wird bezahlt.
Bilde das Vorgangspassiv im Präteritum: Die Brücke ___ 1998 gebaut.
wurde — The marker 1998 places the process in the past: preterite wurde gebaut.
Bilde das Vorgangspassiv im Perfekt: Der Vertrag ist gestern unterschrieben ___.
worden — The passive perfect ends in participle plus worden, not geworden.
When it doesn't hold
What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.
- With sein you state not the action but the condition something is left in.Das Fenster ist geöffnet.
- Dative verbs form a passive with no subject: helfen cannot produce a nominative.Mir wurde geholfen.
- Some passives have no real subject at all: they start with es and only say what goes on.Es wird viel getanzt.
What your own language pushes you to say
Wrong Das Haus ist renoviert worden von meinem Vater gestern.
Right Das Haus ist gestern von meinem Vater renoviert worden.
English keeps «has been renovated» together and adds agent and time afterwards. German ends the clause with the participle plus worden, so anything written after them falls outside the frame.
