Review the contrast after listening

Qué solución tan práctica.

/ke soluˈθjon tan ˈpɾaktika/

Sincere praise: the change saves time and works well.

Qué solución tan práctica.

/ke soluˈθjon tan ˈpɾaktika/

Ironic criticism: the change adds work and fails to solve the problem.

What tells the two sounds apart

  • sincere readingFor the positive context, use a warm, engaged delivery with clear prominence on práctica.
  • ironic readingFor the critical context in this model, use a more restrained range and a slightly lengthened práctica. This is one possible performance, not an irony code.

Why it is hard

Literal praise may conflict with the situation and communicate criticism. The pair is identical in words and segmental IPA; context and delivery support different stances. This careful Spain performance is illustrative: irony has no fixed pitch pattern, and a flat or warm voice is not proof of irony or sincerity in any variety. Task: Listen to the first six utterances with the words, IPA and stance labels closed. Describe an audible feature of each performance and any contrast between the repeated wordings; record no audible contrast if applicable. Do not decide irony or sincerity from voice alone. Then open the situations and compare their evidence with the delivery. Read the four practice examples in context; create a scene with the context sentence as a quoted positive judgement followed by a contrary fact, distinguishing the quote from your critical stance and explaining the contextual evidence.

  4. Todo ha salido de maravilla./ˈtodo a saˈlido de maɾaˈbiʝa/Ironic: the speaker has just described delays and missing equipment.
