j and g before e or i: the same sound
CEFR A1
jefe
/ˈxefe/
boss
gente
/ˈxente/
people
What tells the two sounds apart
- /x/Raise the back of your tongue towards the soft palate and let air pass with friction. Keep your voice off.
Why it is hard
English j is usually /dʒ/. Spanish j and g before e or i share /x/: this pair shows a shared sound, not a minimal contrast. Compare “jefe”, “gente” and “giro”. In “gato”, g is /ɡ/ instead. A softer [h]-like sound occurs in much of the Americas and parts of Spain; it is a regional model, not a spelling error.
La gente mira el jardín.
