The weekend bicycle

CEFR B1233 words

Questions

You answer them with the text in front of you. It isn't memory: it's understanding.

  1. Which proposed trial time lets Víctor test the bicycle after Inés finishes using it and before his departure?

— Inés returns at seven on Friday and Víctor leaves at nine on Saturday. A half-past-seven Friday trial fits both boundaries and the patio’s evening use. Saturday at ten is after departure; Friday at half past six is before the bicycle returns.

  2. If Víctor takes the bus, when could he reach his cousin’s house?

A las once y media. — The bus arrives at eleven and the remaining walk takes half an hour, giving eleven-thirty. Eleven is arrival at the station. Ten is the cousin’s earliest welcome time, not the bus arrival.

  3. Which feature of Inés's bicycle is least useful for an explicitly stated need of this visit?

La cesta delantera para transportar objetos. — Víctor carries his gift in a small backpack and plans no shopping, so extra carrying space does not meet a stated need. Gears help with the long hill, and he explicitly wants to check the brakes. This compares the offered equipment with this particular journey.

  4. Which return arrangement fits both Víctor's plan and Inés's next use if he borrows her bicycle?

— Víctor plans to return on Saturday before dark, leaving the bicycle available for Inés at eight on Sunday. Nine on Sunday is too late. His own repair being ready on Monday does not extend the loan.

  5. Why does the bus remain a workable alternative for lunch?

— Eleven plus the half-hour walk gets him to the house before lunch. His own bicycle is unavailable until Monday, and the route from the station is on foot, not an extra bicycle stage.

  6. Víctor cannot try a borrowed bicycle until Saturday at ten. Which plan could still get him to his cousin that Saturday?

— The planned bicycle departure is at nine, before the hypothetical ten o’clock trial, and Víctor wants to check the bicycle before accepting it. His own is unavailable until Monday. The Saturday bus plus the half-hour walk supplies an alternative route that day. Checking at the destination reverses his stated condition.
