The recipe in two messages
CEFR A2127 words

Questions
You answer them with the text in front of you. It isn't memory: it's understanding.
Before Tom sees the second message, how many diners could his vegetables serve under the original recipe?
Four diners — Tom sets out the quantities from the first list, which is a recipe for four. The later message reduces them for two, but he has not used that reduction yet.
Which set of vegetables follows the second message for this dinner?
Two carrots and one potato — The list gives four carrots and two potatoes for four people; half of each is two carrots and one potato. Each alternative applies the reduction unevenly or changes the starting quantities.
They use all the soup for their dinner. After applying the second message, how much water from the original litre is left unused?
Half a litre — The original list includes one litre and the second message halves each quantity for two diners. They use half a litre, leaving half unused. A quarter applies another halving; a full litre ignores the water used; two litres exceeds the original supply.
After following the second message, how many carrots from Tom’s first selection are saved for tomorrow?
Two carrots — Tom initially sets out four carrots. Half are needed for two diners; the other two are removed and stored for tomorrow.
Tom takes one extra carrot from the vegetables saved for tomorrow and adds it to tonight’s soup. How many carrots would the soup contain?
Three carrots in the soup — The original four carrots are halved to two for dinner; the other two are saved. Adding one saved carrot gives three. Four restores the entire original quantity, two ignores the addition, and one subtracts the carrot instead of adding it.
Two more friends join before cooking. What amount of water from the original recipe would suit the new group?
One litre — The original recipe serves four with one litre. Tom and the narrator plus two friends make four, so the original water amount now matches the group.
