El correo del casero (The landlord's email)

MCER B1215 palabras

From: Nadia Cortés. To: Luis Bermejo. Subject: The boiler in flat 2B. Date: 3 April.

Dear Mr Bermejo, I am writing about the boiler in flat 2B. It stopped working on 12 March and it is still broken today. I have phoned your office four times and left two messages. I know that these things take time, but three weeks without hot water is a long time, and the flat is very cold in the evenings.

I have bought an electric heater. It cost 65 euros and my electricity bill this month is much higher than usual. I would be grateful if you could tell me the date of the repair. Yours sincerely, Nadia Cortés.

From: Luis Bermejo. To: Nadia Cortés. Subject: Re: The boiler in flat 2B. Date: 5 April.

Dear Nadia, thank you for your email, and I am sorry about all this. As you know, the plumber went to the flat on 26 March and nobody opened the door, so that appointment was wasted. I am sure you were busy.

The spare part is difficult to find at the moment. I am doing everything I can and I will be in touch as soon as I have news. By the way, the rent for April has not arrived yet. Best wishes, Luis.

Preguntas

Se contestan con el texto delante. No es memoria: es entender.

  1. How long had the boiler been broken when Nadia wrote the first email?

About three weeks — La cabecera dice 3 de abril y el cuerpo dice que se estropeó el 12 de marzo: son tres semanas, y el propio texto lo confirma con «three weeks without hot water».

  2. The electric heater cost ___ euros.

65 — «It cost 65 euros». El dato está en el segundo párrafo del primer correo, junto a la factura de la luz.

  3. Nadia's email explains why nobody opened the door on 26 March.

False — Falso, y hay que darse cuenta de lo que NO está: el primer correo habla de llamadas y mensajes, pero no dice ni una palabra de la visita del fontanero. Esa cita perdida solo aparece en la respuesta del casero.

  4. Which of these does Luis Bermejo NOT give in his reply?

A date for the repair — Da el día de la visita (26 de marzo) y da un motivo (la pieza de repuesto es difícil de encontrar), pero la fecha que se le pedía no aparece: solo dice «as soon as I have news».

  5. What is the effect of the sentence 'I am sure you were busy'?

It sounds polite, but it quietly blames the tenant for the missed visit — Aquí no se pregunta por un dato, sino por el tono. La frase suena amable —da por hecho que hubo un buen motivo— pero deja caer que el retraso lo causó quien no abrió la puerta. En un correo semiformal así se reprocha sin levantar la voz.

  6. Why does the reply end with a line about the April rent?

It changes the subject and reminds the tenant about the unpaid rent — El primer correo no menciona el alquiler en ningún momento. El «by the way» final cambia de tema y devuelve la presión al otro lado, justo después de no haber dado la fecha que se pedía.
