Preguntas

Se contestan escuchando. Si fallas, se te dice en qué momento está.

  1. What does he want to do before ranking the candidates?

Make the criteria explicit — I'd rather we were explicit about our criteria before we start ranking anyone.

  2. What is her main objection to weighting «distance travelled»?

That they cannot measure it consistently — I don't disagree in principle. What troubles me is that we can't measure it consistently. No discute el fondo, sino la medida.

  3. She says the panel did the same thing last year and ended up ranking by marks.

True — Last year we said the same and then ranked by marks anyway.

  4. They agree on sixty per cent academic and ___ per cent context.

forty — Sixty per cent academic, forty per cent context, reviewed after this round.

  5. Why does she want the weighting published in the call for applications?

Because a criterion they cannot defend in writing should not be used — If we can't defend it in writing, we shouldn't be using it. No menciona ninguna ley ni a ningún candidato.

  6. She accepts the agreement without any condition.

False — I can live with that, provided the review actually happens this time. Ese provided es la condición.

A We have four candidates and two grants, so I'd rather we were explicit about our criteria before we start ranking anyone.

B Agreed. My worry is that we keep saying “potential” and mean four different things by it.

A Then let me put my cards on the table. I weight distance travelled more heavily than final marks.

B Which would favour candidate three, whose school sends almost no one to university.

A It would, and I'm aware that sounds like special pleading. But a B from that school is not the same B as from a selective one.

B I don't disagree in principle. What troubles me is that we can't measure it consistently, and last year we said the same and then ranked by marks anyway.

A Fair. Shall we write the weighting down now, before we look at the names again?

B Yes, and let's make it public in the call for applications. If we can't defend it in writing, we shouldn't be using it.

A That's a fair test. Sixty per cent academic, forty per cent context, reviewed after this round?

B I can live with that, provided the review actually happens this time.
