Read and choose A, B, C or D. A radio project When our teacher suggested making a school radio programme, I thought it would be another project where the confident students did all the talking. I was happy to write questions, but I didn’t want anyone to hear my voice. Our team decided to interview people who did small, useful jobs around the school, rather than the students who usually won prizes. The first person we interviewed was the caretaker. I had seen him every day but had never spoken to him. He explained how he checked the buildings before anyone arrived. I asked the questions while my friend held the microphone. Halfway through, I stopped worrying about my voice because I was interested in his answers. Editing was harder than recording. We had nearly an hour of material and needed a ten-minute programme. At first we removed every pause. It sounded strange, as if nobody had time to think. We put some pauses back and kept one small mistake that made the caretaker laugh. He said it sounded like a real conversation. We played the programme in a lunchtime club. Only twelve students came, which disappointed one team member. But afterwards several listeners asked if they could help make the next programme. We realised that a small audience could still be an interested one. Now I’m planning another interview. I still prepare my questions carefully, but I don’t write out every word I might say. Leaving space for an unexpected answer makes the interview better. I’m not suddenly the loudest person in class. I’ve simply found a reason to speak.

Choose sentences A–H for gaps 1–5. Three are extra. Our class organised a clothes exchange. We wanted to try it after discussing waste in a lesson. (1) ___ We booked the hall for Saturday and asked families to bring clean clothes they no longer wore. At first, we planned to put everything on one long table. (2) ___ So we made separate areas for coats, shirts and sports clothes. On the morning of the event, our signs were ready, but there were too few volunteers. (3) ___ Within half an hour, we had enough people at each table. Visitors brought clothes and received tokens to choose other items. Some people brought nothing but still wanted to look. (4) ___ They could buy a token for a small amount, and we used that money for the hall. There were a few coats left at the end. (5) ___ A local charity was happy to collect them the following day. A Two classmates phoned their friends and asked them to help. B However, that would make sizes and types difficult to find. C We decided that they should also be able to take part. D We did not want to throw those away. E That conversation gave us the idea for the event. F They decided to return all the tokens before arriving. G It had already closed several years before our lesson. H Everyone had to wear the same uniform during the event.

Welcome to our weekend photography course. We’ll meet at the town library on Saturday, not at the school. The group leaves at ten thirty. Bring a camera if you have one, though we can lend you one. Everyone should bring a water bottle. Our first stop is the old bridge, where we’ll practise taking pictures of moving water. After lunch, we’ll look at our photos in a classroom. The course costs twelve pounds, and this includes printing your favourite photograph. Please email Ms Carter to book a place. That’s Carter, C A R T E R. We finish at four.

A: In this photograph, three young people are working in a garden. On the left, one person is holding a plant in a pot. Another person is kneeling and using a small tool to make a hole in the ground. The third person is watering some flowers. There is a school building behind them, so they may be doing a project together. It seems to be daytime. They look interested in their work, and each person has a different job. I can’t tell exactly what they are saying, but they seem to be helping each other. The garden looks like a pleasant place to spend time outside. B: This picture shows two teenagers preparing food in a kitchen. They are standing at a table, where I can see bread, tomatoes and plates. One person is cutting tomatoes, while the other is putting food on a plate. They seem to be making sandwiches, although I can’t know who will eat them. The table is being used as a work area, and the food is easy to reach. Both people look busy with different parts of the job. I think preparing a meal together can be enjoyable. The picture reminds me of helping with lunch at home, but these people may be cooking for another reason.

Small groups are easier for me because I get time to speak. When someone is new, we should explain things without making them feel different. I enjoy cooking with friends because we share a job and talk while we work. I’d rather join an event first, but I could help organise it later.

A useful skill I learned to repair a bike last summer. My uncle show me how to change a tyre. First I watched him and then I tried on my bike. It was difficult and I did mistakes but he helped me. Now I can do it without help. I think it is a useful skill because a bike can break far from home. Also you save money when you repair it yourself. I recommend this to teenagers who cycle. You don’t need many things to start and it is good to do something with your hands. Try it!

Keep your wheels turning! Have you ever had a flat tyre on the way to school? Last summer, I learned to repair one, and it’s already saved me a long walk. My uncle showed me the steps, then let me practise on an old wheel. At first I made mistakes, but repeating the job helped me remember what to do. I recommend basic bike repair to anyone who cycles. It saves money and gives you confidence when something goes wrong. You only need a few tools and some patience. Ask an experienced person to help, and try it yourself!

When I opened the box, I found something unexpected. It was a small wooden boat. My grandad gave me the box but he didn’t say what was inside. I asked him about the boat. He told me he made it when he was my age. I was very surprise because it was beautiful. We went to the park and put the boat on the little lake. It moved slowly in the wind. Then it stopped near a tree and I couldn’t get it. Grandad used a long stick to bring it back. We laughed and took it home together.

When I opened the box, I found something unexpected. Inside was a tiny wooden boat with my grandfather’s name on it. He explained that he had made it as a teenager.
