L'email del padrone di casa (The landlord's email)

QCER B1215 parole

From: Nadia Cortés. To: Luis Bermejo. Subject: The boiler in flat 2B. Date: 3 April.

Dear Mr Bermejo, I am writing about the boiler in flat 2B. It stopped working on 12 March and it is still broken today. I have phoned your office four times and left two messages. I know that these things take time, but three weeks without hot water is a long time, and the flat is very cold in the evenings.

I have bought an electric heater. It cost 65 euros and my electricity bill this month is much higher than usual. I would be grateful if you could tell me the date of the repair. Yours sincerely, Nadia Cortés.

From: Luis Bermejo. To: Nadia Cortés. Subject: Re: The boiler in flat 2B. Date: 5 April.

Dear Nadia, thank you for your email, and I am sorry about all this. As you know, the plumber went to the flat on 26 March and nobody opened the door, so that appointment was wasted. I am sure you were busy.

The spare part is difficult to find at the moment. I am doing everything I can and I will be in touch as soon as I have news. By the way, the rent for April has not arrived yet. Best wishes, Luis.

Domande

Si risponde con il testo davanti. Non è memoria: è capire.

  1. How long had the boiler been broken when Nadia wrote the first email?

About three weeks — L'intestazione dice 3 aprile e il corpo dice che si è rotta il 12 marzo: sono tre settimane, e il testo stesso lo conferma con «three weeks without hot water».

  2. The electric heater cost ___ euros.

65 — «It cost 65 euros». Il dato è nel secondo paragrafo della prima email, accanto alla bolletta della luce.

  3. Nadia's email explains why nobody opened the door on 26 March.

False — Falso, e bisogna accorgersi di quello che NON c'è: la prima email parla di telefonate e messaggi, ma non dice una parola sulla visita dell'idraulico. Quell'appuntamento saltato compare solo nella risposta del padrone di casa.

  4. Which of these does Luis Bermejo NOT give in his reply?

A date for the repair — Dà il giorno della visita (26 marzo) e dà un motivo (il pezzo di ricambio è difficile da trovare), ma la data che gli era stata chiesta non c'è: dice solo «as soon as I have news».

  5. What is the effect of the sentence 'I am sure you were busy'?

It sounds polite, but it quietly blames the tenant for the missed visit — Qui non si chiede un dato, ma il tono. La frase suona gentile — dà per scontato che ci fosse un buon motivo — ma lascia intendere che il ritardo sia colpa di chi non ha aperto la porta. In un'email semiformale è così che si rimprovera senza alzare la voce.

  6. Why does the reply end with a line about the April rent?

It changes the subject and reminds the tenant about the unpaid rent — La prima email non nomina mai l'affitto. Il «by the way» finale cambia argomento e restituisce la pressione al mittente, subito dopo aver evitato di dare la data richiesta.
