L'allenatrice (The coach)
QCER A2122 parole
I play basketball in a girls' team. We are not very good: this season we are last, and we are not winning many games.
But we have something the other teams do not have. Our coach is called Rosa and she is seventy years old. She cannot run, she cannot jump and she cannot show us anything with the ball. She only talks.
She talks about where to look, when to pass, and why the fastest player is not always the best one.
Today we are playing against the first team of the league. We are losing by twenty points and Rosa is not nervous. She is smiling.
'Look at the clock,' she says. 'We still have ten minutes to learn something.'

Domande
Si risponde con il testo davanti. Non è memoria: è capire.
What is the position of the team this season?
Last — This season we are last. La prima del campionato è la squadra contro cui giocano oggi.
Rosa shows the girls how to play with the ball.
False — Falso: she cannot show us anything with the ball. She only talks. Insegna parlando, non giocando.
Rosa is ___ years old.
seventy — She is seventy years old: settant'anni, ed è per questo che non può correre né saltare.
Why is Rosa a good coach if she cannot play?
Because she teaches them to think about the game — Il testo non dice «è una brava allenatrice»: mostra di cosa parla. Dove guardare, quando passare e perché il più veloce non è sempre il migliore. Quello non si corre, si pensa.
What is happening in today's game?
They are losing by twenty points — We are losing by twenty points, e mancano ancora dieci minuti.
What does Rosa mean by 'We still have ten minutes to learn something'?
That the important thing is not the result, it is learning — Guarda cosa chiede: to LEARN something, non vincere. E lo dice sorridendo mentre perdono di venti. Per lei i dieci minuti che restano servono ad altro.
