By the time the rehearsal ended, it was clear that the performance would not work as originally planned. The director had invited suggestions, but several of us hesitated to speak, partly because the most experienced members appeared satisfied. Only when a musician described a difficulty she had encountered did the discussion move beyond general assurances. Her point was not that the arrangement lacked ambition, but that its complexity was obscuring the melody we wanted the audience to hear. Had she kept that concern to herself, we might have mistaken silence for agreement. The revised version was simpler, though not less demanding: each pause now required a more deliberate response from the players. What changed was our understanding of where the difficulty lay. We left with fewer notes to perform and more decisions to make, having accepted that abandoning part of a plan need not mean abandoning the purpose that gave rise to it.
- several off us → several of us
«several of us»: Of é a preposição deste grupo; off exprime afastamento e é outra palavra.
- members appears satisfied → members appeared satisfied
- Had she keep → Had she kept
«Had she kept»: Kept é o particípio de keep. Aqui Had surge antes de she numa condição irreal do passado, equivalente a «If she had kept».
- silence for a greement → silence for agreement
- fewer note to perform → fewer notes to perform
«fewer notes to perform»: A referência é plural; mantém a terminação -s do nome nesta passagem.
- the difficulty lied → the difficulty lay
«the difficulty lay»: Lay é aqui o passado de lie, estar situado; lied corresponde a lie, mentir.
Compara separadamente palavras ouvidas e ortografia.
