On Saturday morning, Maya and Tom carried a heavy box of posters to the community hall. The sale started at nine, and they wanted to help early. The front door was locked, but a blue envelope lay under it. Mrs Bell had written on it, For Maya, side gate, open before nine. Tom looked along the quiet street and asked, Who leaves a key like this? Maya smiled because she remembered Mrs Bell at the bakery that morning. Mrs Bell had a bandage on her right wrist, and she could not lift heavy boxes. Maya understood why the message sounded so careful.
Inside they found a brass key and a shorter note. The note said, The gate sticks on cold mornings. Lift the gate before you turn the key. Leave the green chair near the door for the first customers. Start with the history books on the first table. Maya read the note twice. It was a clear plan, not a puzzle or a trick. She said, Mrs Bell knows we like a tidy room and early work. Tom folded the note, and they walked around to the side gate.
At the side gate, the key scraped and would not move. Tom pushed harder, but Maya stopped him. Lift the gate first, then turn the key gently. Tom lifted the metal frame a little, and the key turned smoothly. They carried in the posters and set four tables for the sale. They placed the green chair near the door, just as the note described. It waited for one tired visitor, not for the books. Maya put the history books on the first table.
Just before nine, Mrs Bell arrived with a sling and a tin of biscuits. She said, You read the lift part, and you came early to help. Maya returned the brass key in its blue envelope. At nine, the door opened, and the book sale began. A tired visitor sat in the green chair while other customers browsed the history books and carried some to the till. Tom thanked Mrs Bell for the clear note, and she smiled. The sale stayed busy, friendly, and calm all morning. At the end, they agreed that a good note can open more than one door.
