Reporting what someone said

CEFR B1 · part 1

edumaterial's parts within the level. The European framework does not subdivide them.

The rule, in three lines

Reporting speech changes three things: the person, the tense if the reporting verb is in the past, and the time markers.

The usual slip. Keeping «that» everywhere and forgetting that questions need si or ce que, not que.

Why it catches you out. English lets you drop the «that» and uses «if» and «what» in indirect questions. So your French comes out with no que at all, and with que where it needs ce que.
