Relative pronouns in prepositional phrases

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Reconstruct the complete preposition and make lequel agree with its antecedent.
  • Distinguish dont from de laquelle when de belongs to a larger prepositional phrase.

Before you start

  • Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.

The idea

Reconstruct the complete preposition and make lequel agree with its antecedent.

First reconstruct the sentence without a relative: se référer à une procédure, travailler sur un dossier. Keep the preposition when joining the clauses. Lequel agrees with its antecedent: sur lequel, sur laquelle, sur lesquels, sur lesquelles.

À and de contract with lequel and plural forms: auquel, auxquels, auxquelles; duquel, desquels, desquelles. Feminine singular keeps two words: à laquelle, de laquelle. Start with the verb or phrase’s relation, not gender alone.

Dont can replace a simple de complement. After à côté de, au cours de or within a noun complement already preceded by another preposition, keep the whole phrase with duquel or de laquelle. For people, preposition + qui can be valid and must not be a false distractor. Parmi takes lequel.

Form and relation

French caseWhat to preserve

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • Parler de allows dont.La tour dont nous parlons est fermée.
  • Sur le toit de requires the complete noun phrase.La tour sur le toit de laquelle nous travaillons est fermée.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong La règle à lequel je me réfère.

Right La règle à laquelle je me réfère.

English which does not show gender; French règle requires feminine laquelle.

Combine both decisions

La réunion a duré deux heures. Nous avons défini les critères au cours de cette réunion. Joignez les phrases en gardant au cours de et réunion comme antécédent.

  • Join the sentences while retaining both pieces of information and the duration.
  • Preserve the complete phrase au cours de and the specified antecedent.
  • The relative form agrees with its antecedent and connects the time relation correctly.

Au cours de remains complete and réunion requires laquelle. A different clause order is acceptable if antecedent and duration stay unchanged.
