Concession and clause chaining

- Express a concessive relation with a conjunction, connector adverb or preposition while preserving each pattern's syntax.
- Chain several propositions without losing clause boundaries, verb position or the logical relation.
The idea
Concession links two facts that coexist although one would normally lead us to expect the opposite of the other: it was raining and, contrary to expectation, we went out. The logical content can be retained with obwohl, dennoch or trotz, but each resource builds a different syntactic unit.
obwohl introduces a subordinate clause and places the finite verb at the end: Obwohl die Zeit knapp war, prüften wir alle Belege. When the subordinate clause fills the initial field, the main clause starts after the comma with its finite verb: prüften wir, not wir prüften. obgleich and wenngleich can express a related meaning with a more marked or written tone; they are not automatic substitutes in every context.
dennoch and trotzdem are connector adverbs. They refer back to a previous proposition and belong to a main clause with the verb in second position: Die Zeit war knapp. Dennoch prüften wir alle Belege. They can also occur in the middle field: Wir prüften dennoch alle Belege. The rule is therefore not 'the verb always follows dennoch' but 'the main clause retains V2 and the connector occupies a position inside it'.
trotz is a preposition and turns the obstacle into a noun phrase: Trotz der knappen Zeit prüften wir alle Belege. Formal standard German is taught with the genitive. Some distributions and fixed forms require finer analysis —for example trotz allem— so the complete construction should be learned rather than turning a usage observation into a general licence to omit case marking.

How it sounds

With obwohl, the first proposition becomes subordinate and waren moves to the end. With dennoch, two main clauses remain and veröffentlichte occupies V2. With trotz, vorläufig must be nominalised without adding a new conclusion.
