Me gusta: the sentence turns round
CEFR A1
What you will learn
- Identify the liked thing or activity as the grammatical subject of gustar.
- Choose gusta for a singular noun or infinitive and gustan for a plural noun.
- Use me and te actively at A1 and read the complete indirect-object reference without confusing it with subject pronouns.
The idea
Spanish builds “me gusta” around the thing that is pleasing. In “Me gusta la música”, “la música” is the grammatical subject and “me” identifies the experiencer. This is why a word-for-word “yo gusto la música” does not express the English meaning “I like music”. Choose gusta or gustan by looking after the verb: one thing or an activity normally takes gusta; several countable things take gustan.
The active A1 core on this page is “me gusta”, “me gustan”, “te gusta” and the negative versions. The complete pronoun table is supplied because a paradigm must not falsely group different persons under one form.
The optional clarifier cannot replace the unstressed pronoun: “A Marta le gusta el cine” is complete, but “A Marta gusta el cine” is not. Broader work with le/les, reduplication and related verbs such as encantar belongs to later practice.

How it sounds
- Me gusta leer. Me gustan las revistas. An infinitive functions as a singular activity, so use gusta. A plural noun phrase controls gustan. The experiencer is the speaker in both messages, so use me.
