After a quantity, French uses bare de, with no article: beaucoup de livres, trop de bruit, un kilo de pommes. The du, de la, des you learnt disappears. It comes back only before a possessive or a demonstrative, and with la plupart, which requires des.

Why it catches you out. English says a lot of books with no article at all, so your trap is the opposite one: you drop the de as well and write «beaucoup livres». In French the de is never optional.
