qui is the subject; que is the direct object; où is place or time; and dont stands for a de.
The usual slip. Dropping the relative altogether, because English can: «the book I read» has no word where French needs one.
Why it catches you out. English can leave the relative out when it is an object — «the film I saw» — and French never can. So your sentences come out with a word missing, and nothing sounds wrong to you.
