Each verb carries its own preposition, learned with the verb. Some take à, some take de, and an important group takes none at all.
The usual slip. Translating the English particle: «listen to» becomes écouter à, which does not exist.
Why it catches you out. English glues particles onto almost everything: «listen to», «look at», «wait for», «pay for». You translate them one by one and produce four mistakes in a single sentence.
