Collocations: deciding, implementing and examining

CEFR B2

What you will learn

  • Choose a complete collocation preserving the stated decision stage or discourse action.
  • Distinguish considering, questioning and implementing without treating them as synonyms.

Before you start

  • Have studied the stated prerequisites and reconstruct who acts before choosing a form.

The idea

Choose a complete collocation preserving the stated decision stage or discourse action.

Learn verb, determiner and complement together: prendre une décision, faire une proposition, mettre un projet en œuvre. Do not translate the support verb in isolation. The combinations distinguish stages: proposing a measure establishes neither decision nor implementation.

Prendre en compte les objections includes objections in consideration; mettre en doute une estimation questions validity; mettre en œuvre une méthode begins implementation. Check the complement: faire une remarque and prendre la parole do not allow swapped verbs in the same idiomatic French.

Do not turn the family into a universal rule. Some combinations have alternatives by register, region and meaning. Here the task is to preserve a stage and choose among specific options; a valid paraphrase is not wrong for lacking the expected verb.

Form and relation

French caseWhat to preserve
Nous faisons une proposition. An option is proposed.
Nous mettons le projet en œuvre.A project is implemented.

How it sounds

  • Le comité a pris une décision, mais sa mise en œuvre reste à organiser.Decision and implementation are separate stages.
  • Le rapport prend en compte les réserves sans mettre en doute les mesures.Considering reservations does not invalidate measurements.
Three scenes: studying a workbench drawing, voting at a meeting and assembling the workbench in a workshop.
Observe agents and the relation between scenes; compare them with the written cases.

Les réserves doivent être intégrées à l’analyse. La rédaction ne doit ni contester la validité des chiffres ni annoncer l’application d’une méthode. Quelle phrase respecte ces trois contraintes ?

Answer: Nous prendrons en compte les réserves avant de conclure. — This alternative is appropriate: «Nous prendrons en compte les réserves avant de conclure.». Prendre en compte includes reservations in the analysis. Mettre en doute questions validity without necessarily declaring falsity; mettre en œuvre states implementation and prendre en défaut identifies a fault.

When it doesn't hold

What breaks the rule, said out loud. Hiding it is what makes you feel cheated in the exam.

  • An option is proposed.Nous faisons une proposition.
  • A project is implemented.Nous mettons le projet en œuvre.

What your own language pushes you to say

Wrong Le comité a fait la parole.

Right Le comité a pris la parole.

English make a speech does not give faire la parole; taking the floor is prendre la parole.

Combine both decisions

Le groupe suggère une nouvelle méthode ; aucune adoption ni application n’est acquise. Rédigez une phrase avec une collocation de proposition ou une paraphrase idiomatique, puis indiquez deux étapes encore non acquises.

Answer available without interaction
  • Express the suggestion of a new method with a proposal collocation or idiomatic paraphrase, without asserting adoption.
  • State that adoption and implementation remain pending; do not require discussion of figures or reservations absent from this case.

Answer: Le groupe fait une proposition de méthode. Ni l’adoption ni la mise en œuvre ne sont acquises.

Le groupe propose une nouvelle méthode is acceptable. Adoption and implementation remain pending; do not invent a vote.
