Matizar lo que afirmas: appear to, tend to, arguably

MCER C1

Qué vas a aprender

Compara dos frases con el mismo dato: Social media causes anxiety y Social media may contribute to anxiety in some users.

The data suggest that the effect is small.

Combinados con adverbios —possibly, arguably, largely, to some extent— gradúan con mucha precisión. This is arguably the best solution admite que hay discusión; This is the best solution la cierra.

It is widely believed that…, It has been argued that…, There is some evidence that…

  • The results suggest that the treatment is effective in mild cases.
  • Younger users tend to abandon the app within a week.
  • This is arguably the most important change of the decade.Arguably admite que alguien podría discutirlo. Sin él, la frase se cierra.
  • It has been argued that the policy failed for other reasons.
  • Most participants, though not all, reported an improvement.

  1. Usa esta imagen

A pilot study of twelve households found lower use in one month. Choose the claim that preserves the limits of the evidence.

the findings suggest that use may fall under these conditions — Suggest y may conservan el tamaño y el carácter provisional del estudio.

  2. Usa esta imagen

Rewrite 'The discrepancy results from two different counting methods' so that it becomes an evidence-based inference rather than a demonstrated fact.

the discrepancy appears to result from two different counting methods — Appear to presenta una inferencia basada en indicios sin elevarla a hecho demostrado.

  3. Usa esta imagen

The source is named but the writer does not endorse its unverified accusation. Choose the best reporting frame.

the contractor alleges that the figures were altered — Allege atribuye la acusación y mantiene distancia respecto de su verdad.

It could possibly be argued that it might perhaps be true.
Water boils at 100 °C. (no «Water may tend to boil…»)
It seems that the data are incomplete. / The data seem incomplete.
  • En inglés hablado, el hedging se hace con otras piezas: I'd say, sort of, kind of, more or less. It's sort of complicated, I'd say.

Se dice mal It is obvious that this solution is the best one and everybody knows it.

Se dice bien This appears to be the most effective solution in the cases studied.
