If the verb takes its object with no preposition, it is direct: le, la, les. If it takes it with à, it is indirect: lui, leur. And the pronoun always goes before the verb.
The usual slip. Putting the pronoun after the verb, because that is where English puts it: I see him.
Why it catches you out. In English the object always follows the verb — I see him, I give him the book — with no exceptions. So you build the whole sentence the wrong way round and nothing feels missing.
