There was y there were: cómo se dice «había»

MCER A2

Qué vas a aprender

  • Reconocer there was y there were en ejemplos breves de nivel A2.
  • Aplicar there was y there were a evidencia visual explícita sin copiar un modelo resuelto.

There was a school here. There were two schools here.

Plural, were. There was a lot of noise. There were a lot of people.

There was a problem, nunca «It had a problem».

La negativa y la pregunta funcionan como con cualquier to be en pasado: There wasn't any bread. There weren't any eggs. Was there a party? Were there many people? Y la respuesta corta repite el verbo: Yes, there was. No, there weren't.

In my grandmother's house there was a big kitchen and there were three bedrooms.

Y se completa con dos formas más que vas a necesitar enseguida: para el futuro, there will be, que no cambia ni con singular ni con plural; y con modales, there might be o there should be. En todas ellas el verbo que sigue a there es siempre be, sin conjugar.

Cómo suena

  • There was a cinema on this street twenty years ago.Un cine, singular: was.
  • There were a lot of people at the concert.People es plural aunque no acabe en -s: were.
  • There wasn't any milk in the fridge.
  • Were there many students in your class?
  • There will be a meeting tomorrow.

  1. Usa esta imagen

Introduce the single fountain in the old square.

There was one fountain. — El grupo singular one fountain selecciona there was.

  2. Usa esta imagen

Introduce the two trees in the old square.

There were two trees. — El grupo plural two trees selecciona there were.

  3. Usa esta imagen

No cars appear anywhere in the square. Choose the past existential negative.

There weren't any cars.

There was a table and four chairs in the room.
  • Con there no se usa did para nada, ni en negativa ni en pregunta: es to be y se apaña solo. There wasn't a bus. (no «There didn't be a bus»)
There's two people waiting. (hablado; escrito: There are two people waiting.)
There used to be a bakery on the corner.

Se dice mal There was three books on the table.

Se dice bien There were three books on the table.
