La regola, in tre righe

Nella conversazione normale, all'affermativa si dice a lot of, e vale per tutto: a lot of friends, a lot of money. Much e many sono la forma delle negative e delle domande: I don't have much money, How many friends…? Many all'affermativa non è sbagliato, ma suona formale (Many students fail the exam); much all'affermativa compare solo in testi formali.

L'errore tipico. Dire I have much friends: sbaglia due volte, perché friends è numerabile e perché all'affermativa ci vuole a lot of.

Perché sfugge proprio a te. «Molto/molti» copre tutto e non distingue l'affermativa dalla negativa, quindi esce He has much money anche in una domanda mal costruita.
