Relative di livello alto: whom, of which e la virgola che cambia il senso

QCER C1

Che cosa imparerai

  • Comprendere forma, significato e registro di relative avanzate e portata dell'informazione.

Stessa parola, stessa posizione, senso diverso.

Alla fine è la forma naturale: the issue we talked about. Davanti al relativo è formale e obbliga a which o whom: the issue about which we talked. Mai «about that».

Altri due strumenti, molto da C1. Of which e of whom per quantificare: There were forty applicants, ten of whom were shortlisted. E which che commenta l'intera frase, non un nome: He arrived two hours late, which annoyed everyone.

The report which was published yesterday diventa The report published yesterday. Con -ing funziona uguale: The woman who is standing there dà The woman standing there.

Come suona

  • The house, which was built in 1890, needs a new roof.Con le virgole, which obbligatorio: qui that sarebbe un errore.
  • The candidate we interviewed yesterday has accepted the offer.
  • She has three sisters, none of whom live in Spain.Of whom quantifica dentro la relativa. Con le cose sarebbe of which.
  • He forgot to send the file, which delayed the whole project.
  • The measures introduced last year have had little effect.Relativa ridotta: davanti a introduced ci starebbe which were e non serve.

Ora tocca a te

  1. Usa questa immagine

Only one consultant reviewed the draft. Add the fact that she lives in Porto without suggesting a choice among consultants.

the consultant, who lives in Porto, reviewed the draft — Con un referente già unico, l'informazione è incidentale e va tra virgole; who funge da soggetto.

  2. Usa questa immagine

Combine the facts in one formal sentence: 'The panel interviewed six applicants. Two of the applicants had led similar projects.'

the panel interviewed six applicants, two of whom had led similar projects — Dopo quantificatore + of e con antecedente umano si usa whom.

  3. Usa questa immagine

Choose the sentence where which comments on the whole preceding event.

the server failed twice, which delayed the launch — La virgola e which permettono alla relativa di commentare l'intero fatto che il server ha fallito due volte.

Quando non vale

Ciò che rompe la regola, detto. Nasconderlo è ciò che ti fa sentire ingannato all'esame.

  • That è obbligatorio, e which impossibile, dopo i superlativi e dopo all, everything, the only e the first. It's the best film that I've ever seen. Everything that happened was recorded.
  • Whose funziona anche con le cose oltre che con le persone, anche se molti parlanti lo evitano e preferiscono of which.a company whose profits have fallen
  • Where, when e why sostituiscono preposizione più which, e non vogliono preposizioni davanti.the town where I grew up (= in which I grew up)
Lì ci va that o niente.the things that he said (no «the things what he said»)

Si dice male The manager, that I spoke with him yesterday, has resigned.

Si dice bene The manager, whom I spoke to yesterday, has resigned.

E tra virgole that è vietato: servono who, whom o which.
