Attenuare ciò che affermi: appear to, tend to, arguably

QCER C1

Che cosa imparerai

  • Comprendere forma, significato e registro di hedging e cautela accademica.

Confronta due frasi con lo stesso dato: Social media causes anxiety e Social media may contribute to anxiety in some users.

The data suggest that the effect is small.

Poi vengono i modali: may, might e could per il possibile, e should per l'atteso. Combinati con avverbi —possibly, arguably, largely, to some extent— graduano con molta precisione. This is arguably the best solution ammette che c'è discussione; This is the best solution la chiude.

It is widely believed that…, It has been argued that…, There is some evidence that…

Come suona

  • The results suggest that the treatment is effective in mild cases.
  • Younger users tend to abandon the app within a week.
  • This is arguably the most important change of the decade.Arguably ammette che qualcuno potrebbe discuterlo. Senza, la frase si chiude.
  • It has been argued that the policy failed for other reasons.
  • Most participants, though not all, reported an improvement. Most invece di all, e l'inciso che lo conferma: precisione, non timidezza.

Gradua certezza, evidenza e responsabilità con verbi, modali, avverbi e forme impersonali.

Ora tocca a te

  1. Usa questa immagine

A pilot study of twelve households found lower use in one month. Choose the claim that preserves the limits of the evidence.

the findings suggest that use may fall under these conditions — Suggest e may conservano la dimensione e il carattere provvisorio dello studio.

  2. Usa questa immagine

Rewrite 'The discrepancy results from two different counting methods' so that it becomes an evidence-based inference rather than a demonstrated fact.

the discrepancy appears to result from two different counting methods — Appear to presenta un'inferenza basata su indizi senza elevarla a fatto dimostrato.

  3. Usa questa immagine

The source is named but the writer does not endorse its unverified accusation. Choose the best reporting frame.

the contractor alleges that the figures were altered — Allege attribuisce l'accusa e mantiene distanza rispetto alla sua verità.

Quando non vale

Ciò che rompe la regola, detto. Nasconderlo è ciò che ti fa sentire ingannato all'esame.

It could possibly be argued that it might perhaps be true.
Water boils at 100 °C. (no «Water may tend to boil…»)
  • Seem e appear possono avere soggetto impersonale o personale, e l'impersonale prende più distanza. It seems that the data are incomplete. / The data seem incomplete.
  • Nell'inglese parlato, l'hedging si fa con altri pezzi: I'd say, sort of, kind of, more or less. It's sort of complicated, I'd say.

Si dice male It is certainly true that this method always works better.

Si dice bene This method appears to work better in most contexts.
