Inversione: quando un madrelingua la usa davvero

QCER C1

Not only did she win, she broke the record.

Le espressioni che la fanno scattare sono poche e si imparano a memoria: never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, no sooner, not only, little, under no circumstances, at no time e only then / only later / only after.

Compare in tre posti e in nessun altro. Nel giornalismo e nel discorso pubblico: Not only has the government failed to act, it has denied the problem. Nella narrativa letteraria: Never had she felt so alone. E in formule fisse di registro molto formale, soprattutto scritte: Under no circumstances should this door be opened.

Un madrelingua direbbe I've never seen anything like it.

No sooner had I sat down than the phone rang —con than, non con when— e Hardly had we arrived when it started to rain, questa sì con when.

È il terzo condizionale senza if. Esistono anche Were I you… e Should you need anything…, entrambe di registro formale, e quest'ultima è frequentissima nelle email di lavoro: Should you have any questions, please contact us.

Come suona

  • Should you have any questions, please contact our office.L'inversione che vedrai di più nella vita: email di lavoro e lettere ufficiali.
  • Under no circumstances should this door be left open.
  • Not only did the film flop, it ended his career.Giornalismo.
  • Had I known you were waiting, I would have hurried.Terzo condizionale senza if.

Ora tocca a te

  1. Usa questa immagine

Rewrite with inversion after the supplied opener: 'We realised the scale of the error only after the second audit.' → 'Only after the second audit ___ the scale of the error.'

did we realise — Only after anteposto attiva did + soggetto + forma base nella principale.

  2. Usa questa immagine

Complete the sequence: 'Hardly ___ the doors when the alarm sounded.'

had they closed — Hardly in una sequenza passata usa il past perfect invertito e si collega con when.

  3. Usa questa immagine

Choose the version in which only the main clause inverts.

only after the witness returned did the inquiry resume — La subordinata dopo after mantiene l'ordine normale; la principale successiva riceve l'inversione.

Quando non vale

Ciò che rompe la regola, detto. Nasconderlo è ciò che ti fa sentire ingannato all'esame.

  • No sooner vuole than, ma hardly e scarcely vogliono when. È arbitrario e va imparato. No sooner had he left than she called. / Hardly had he left when she called.
Only after the meeting did I understand. (pero: Only Ana knew, sin inversión)

Si dice male Not only he arrived late, but also he forgot the documents.

Si dice bene Not only did he arrive late, but he also forgot the documents.
