In un testo di livello alto, He said that… quasi sparisce.

Quattro gruppi coprono quasi tutto.

Con that e una frase intera: claim, admit, deny, point out, argue, insist, explain, complain. He claimed that the data were incomplete. Si dice explain to me, non «explain me».

She urged him to reconsider.

Con -ing, a volte con preposizione: admit, deny, suggest, recommend; e accuse somebody of, blame somebody for, apologise for, insist on, congratulate somebody on. He denied taking the money. They accused her of falsifying the report. She refused to comment.

He admitted stealing it punta al fatto; He admitted that he had stolen it prende distanza e suona più da dichiarazione formale. Sceglierne una è ormai stile, non grammatica.

Come suona

  • The minister denied any involvement in the decision.Deny va con un nome o con -ing, mai con to: non si dice «denied to be involved».
  • She urged the committee to postpone the vote.
  • They accused him of leaking the document.Accuse vuole of e -ing. Con to sarebbe un errore di schema.
  • He pointed out that the figures did not add up.Point out corregge un dato e non prende mai la persona senza to.
  • The company refused to comment on the report.Refuse va con to e senza persona: non si dice «refused him to comment».

Ora tocca a te

  1. Usa questa immagine

Complete the fixed pattern: 'The audit blamed the delay ___ incomplete records.'

on — Blame something on something fissa la causa attribuita; non è lo schema blame somebody for doing.

  2. Usa questa immagine

The source accepts a weakness that complicates its own argument. Choose the most precise verb.

the authors concede that the sample was unusually small — Concede riconosce come valido un punto sfavorevole.

  3. Usa questa immagine

Choose the grammatically complete pattern with urge.

the mediator urged both sides to resume talks — Urge in questo schema richiede oggetto umano e to-infinitive.

Quando non vale

Ciò che rompe la regola, detto. Nasconderlo è ciò che ti fa sentire ingannato all'esame.

  • Say e tell non si scambiano: tell richiede la persona e say la rifiuta senza to.He told me the truth. / He said that it was true.
She suggested that he apply again. (no «suggested him to apply»)
He warned that the bridge was unsafe. / He warned us not to cross.
The witness claims to have seen the car.

Si dice male He suggested me to speak with the director.

Si dice bene He suggested that I speak to the director.

Servono that più frase —spesso con il congiuntivo— oppure -ing senza persona: He suggested speaking to the director.
