Che cosa imparerai
- Riconoscere verbo to be: am, is e are in esempi brevi.
- Scegliere una forma di verbo to be: am, is e are da un'evidenza visiva esplicita.
L'idea
To be è l'«essere» e lo «stare» dell'italiano riuniti in un solo verbo, e al presente ha soltanto tre forme: am, is e are.
Tre forme e basta: I am. He, she, it is. You, we, they are.
It is late.
I am not ready. She is not at home. They are not my friends. Parlando si contrae: she isn't, they aren't.
You are tired diventa Are you tired? He is your brother diventa Is he your brother? Non serve do: to be fa la domanda da solo. E si risponde corto: Yes, I am. No, he isn't.
Con to be si dice chi sei, di dove sei, quanti anni hai, come stai e dove sei: I am Marta. I am from Lisbon. I am twelve years old. I am tired. I am at school. Ecco l'avviso più importante: l'età, la fame, il freddo e la paura vanno con to be, mai con have.

Come suona
- I am Marta and I am from Portugal.
- She is my sister. She is not my cousin.La forma non cambia al negativo: is resta is e si aggiunge solo not dopo.
- Are you ready?
- It is very cold today.
- My parents are teachers.Due persone, are.

Ora tocca a te
Look at the woman and the cat. Choose the sentence that matches the picture.
The woman is beside the cat. — The woman è un sintagma nominale singolare: si usa is.
Look at the group of three friends. Choose the correct sentence.
The three friends are together. — Three friends è plurale: si usa are.
Look at the single cat. Which sentence identifies it correctly?
It is a cat. — Per una sola cosa o un animale senza nome proprio si usa it + is.
Quando non vale
Ciò che rompe la regola, detto. Nasconderlo è ciò che ti fa sentire ingannato all'esame.
Aren't I late?
There is a chair. There are two chairs.
The news, mathematics e physics vogliono is.The news is good today.
- People è plurale anche se non finisce in -s: vuole are.The people in my class are very friendly.
Si dice male Are my best friends.
Si dice bene They are my best friends.
